Changing the GAIM log directory

One of the last things I needed to ensure I would not lose is my GAIM logs. I believe I have only mentioned once my obsession with making sure things are organized and on separate partitions, and this is no exception. I wanted to change my log location to D:\GAIM\logs but unfortunately that is not possible to have it just the way I wanted. What you can do is set an environmental variable of GAIMHOME that changes it to GAIMHOME\.gaim\logs, etc. I made the variable “D:\” which made my log directory “D:\.gaim\logs”. Make sure you copy all your settings from C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application Data\.gaim to the GAIMHOME\.gaim directory.

I happened to find this post on Google. I’m a little lost on how to do this. Is this in Linux or Windows for one. I’m trying to change the directory of my logs as well since I run my OS on VMware. Thanks.

This was the technique for Windows. To clarify right click on “My Computer” and select properties. Go to the Advanced tab and down to the bottom where it says Environmental Variables. Click that and when the box for the environmental variables comes up on the bottom half in system variables click the new button. Enter GAIMHOME for the variable name and the location you would like to move the data to as the value. For example if you want your data at C:\Data\.gaim you would make the value D:\Data. The log location would be C:\Data\.gaim\logs. After you enter in the location click OK and click OK. You should then go to C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application Data\.gaim where USER=you and move the contents to the new location. Reboot your system and everything should be working

Thank you again for your help. I just have one last question. I’d like to do the same with a few other programs, how do you discover the Variable Name of programs?

Depends on the application, a lot give you the option to move the data. Firefox profiles, Thunderbird profiles, Outlook mail, etc. I had to Google for the Gaim one. Try looking in the registry, it will either be under Current user or local machine in most cases.
